Tips For Moving Across The Country

Long distance moving can be fun and exciting. You're going to a new place with new people. However, there's a lot of work that needs to be done beforehand so that you can move as easily and as successfully as possible. Here are some tips for long distance moving.

1. Put Your Mattress in a Box

The first thing that you want to do is make sure that you actually pack your mattress in a box, rather than move it freely. This is important because it will allow you to make sure that your mattress gets to its final destination unstained and still in its original form. If you just pack a loose mattress, you risk getting it really dirty during the move or having it get misshapen if something heavy is pressing on it for a few days. Getting a box is going to be cheaper than getting your mattress cleaned or buying a new one.

2. Talk to Your Building

You can't assume that your building is going to let you move in whenever you want, especially if you are moving into an apartment. They might have a certain time frame during which movers are allowed to use the parking lot or be on the premises, due to the fact that moving can be loud. You don't want to be stuck in a hotel waiting for your time frame to show up. Make sure that you know when it is going to be acceptable to move in.

3. Get Rid of Your Liquids

Leave your paint and other liquids behind. You don't want to risk getting anything on your personal possessions. If you are using a large-scale long distance mover, there also might be other people's items in the car and you don't want to ruin their items either. No matter how tightly you seal your liquids, there's a chance that during a days-long drive, they are going to get forced open. If you absolutely must bring liquids, double bag them in sealed plastic bags in order to ensure that even if they do open or explode, nothing is actually harmed.

4. Clean Your Outdoor Furniture

If you are moving across state lines, there are likely rules about bringing bugs or larvae from other states in. You want to be sure that you thoroughly inspect and clean your outdoor furniture for any nests or other problems that could result in you flouting those rules unintentionally. Cleaning with bleach is a good way to kill everything that might be there.
